Production Begins for 2013 Cadillac ATS

DETROIT – The first 2013 Cadillac ATS compact luxury sport sedan intended for public sale was built today at the Lansing Grand River assembly plant in Michigan, culminating a massive design and development project.

Arriving in U.S. dealerships in August, ATS is Cadillac’s all-new entry into the most significant global luxury segment, featuring a new rear wheel drive-based architecture targeting nimble, quick and fun driving performance.

Cadillac’s Lansing Grand River plant, also the production site for the CTS Sedan, Wagon and Coupe and V-Series performance models of each, underwent a $190 million upgrade for ATS production. A second shift was added, creating or retaining 600 jobs.

In total, the award-winning plant that opened in 2001 now has 1,643 salaried and hourly employees.

“The new Cadillac ATS represents an investment in Lansing and our workforce,” said Tony Francavilla, Lansing regional plant manager. “A successful launch needs a great process and a great product, but at the heart of it all are the people, and the care they put into each and every vehicle.”

The ATS expands Cadillac into the highest volume category in the luxury automotive industry. Following the initial start of production in Lansing, distribution to U.S. dealerships will begin in August. Exports to international markets will begin later this year.

“This is a car with a big mission, and it’s been comprehensively prepared for that mission,” said Don Butler, vice president of Cadillac Marketing. “The new-from-the-ground-up ATS creates a new entryway into the Cadillac brand for luxury car drivers, and a compelling new challenger to the status quo among the top luxury sport sedans.”

The all-new ATS was custom-built using a new lightweight vehicle architecture featuring advanced materials and techniques to ensure precise driving dynamics.  ATS includes a host of exclusive advanced-tech features, including Magnetic Ride Control, the Safety Alert Seat, and CUE, a new in-car user experience for connectivity and control using industry-first capacitive touch and natural voice recognition systems.

The ATS hits the airwaves during the television broadcast of the Opening Ceremonies of the Summer Olympics on Friday.

Monday Maintenance Tip: Check tires for uneven wear

Tire-wear-patterns
Check tires for uneven wear. If you’ve maintained tire inflation properly, uneven wear may indicate the need for a wheel realignment. It can also mean improperly operating brakes or shocks, a bent wheel, internal tire damage, or worn bushings.

Cadillac ATS a choice contender in small luxury car market

Atlanta — Cadillac's new compact 2013 ATS does more than fill out the American luxury car maker's long stagnant vehicle lineup.

The all-new car could make Cadillac a player in the important small luxury segment dominated by the BMW 3 Series.

"This is the first time any American luxury carmaker has built a vehicle on par with the best of what the Germans have to offer in this segment," said Alec Gutierrez, senior auto analyst at Kelley Blue Book. "Nothing has ever before come even close in amenities, styling or performance. I think they are going to sell a ton of these."

The nimble and opulently appointed ATS was introduced to the motoring press last week on a drive through the Appalachian foothills and on a roadracing circuit north of the city. ATS was comfortable and capable on both the road and track.

Looking like a 3/4-sized Cadillac CTS sedan, ATS is almost identical in size to the BMW 3 Series sedans. It is, like the BMW, almost evenly weighted from front to rear. But the Cadillac is slightly lighter and it comes with more luxurious appointments and more modern technology.

ATS offers a variety of engines, including a 202-horsepower four-cylinder, a 272-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder and a 321-horsepower V-6 cylinder, that match or exceed the competition on horsepower but lag behind the Germans in low end torque. Pricing also is competitive, starting at $33,990. A well-equipped premium version will cost about $51,000.

Cadillac has never cracked the introductory luxury car market before because, frankly, it has never built a compact car worthy of consideration. ATS won't even be offered in Europe until after its reception is measured in the U.S. and China.

"I happen to think this car is superior in many ways to the BMW 3 Series, but we at least want to be part of that conversation," said Don Butler, a vice president at Cadillac.

The hard part for Cadillac will be convincing well-heeled young motoring enthusiasts to give ATS a chance. Those who actually try one will see the appeal to enthusiasts, but ATS must start as the unknown in a category loaded with respected automobiles.

"The toughest thing to overcome is another car's great reputation," Gutierrez said. "Cadillac will have to battle the perception gap on whether this is a product that will deliver. Convince people to get behind the wheel and they will immediately know this is a legitimate contender. I can see it stealing sales from the 3 Series and Audi A4."

In three months, Cadillac has added new cars to the large and small ends of its vehicle lineup that survived for more than a year offering only a mid-sized car, a crossover and a big SUV. Cadillac's new full-sized XTS is arriving in showrooms now. ATS will arrive at the end of the summer.

Cadillac ATS Challenges the World in New Film Series

DETROIT – Cadillac will introduce the all-new 2013 ATS via a series of dynamic films in which the new luxury sport sedan confronts some of the world’s extreme roads and treacherous driving conditions.

“Cadillac ATS vs. the World,” debuts online this week and includes 60- and 30-second television spots airing during the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games on July 27.

The cinematic adventure takes the ATS from the deserts of Morocco, to the streets of Monaco, to the Guoliang Tunnels in China and windswept Patagonia, Chile. Each challenge showcases aspects of the car’s agility, driving performance and efficient design.

“Completely new from the ground-up, ATS is Cadillac’s bold entry into the most significant segment of the global luxury auto industry,” says Don Butler, vice president of Cadillac Marketing. “ATS was developed to take on the world’s best sport sedans. So we designed a world challenge for ATS to dramatically demonstrate its all-new purpose-built chassis and advanced technology in a global, cinematic adventure.

“The films demonstrate the performance of the new ATS on a world stage, making it a natural fit for the Olympics.”

The campaign includes short films, ads and photography, directed by Academy Award-nominated documentary film maker Joe Berlinger, and Jeff Zwart, an acclaimed automotive expert and film maker.  The driver in the spots is Derek Hill, a champion race driver and son of Phil Hill, the only American to win the World Driving Championship.  American actor and filmmaker Ross Thomas hosts the series, which includes short films highlighting aspects of the ATS and the cultures of the locations featured in the challenges.

Coming to Cadillac showrooms later this summer, the compact ATS establishes a new entryway to the Cadillac portfolio, with a starting price of $33,990 including freight and the choice of three power-dense engines. EPA highway fuel economy is 33 mpg, while a new 2.0-liter turbo engine and the car’s lightweight construction enables peak 0-60 mpg acceleration of 5.7 seconds.

“’ATS vs. the World’ is about the compelling performance of the car,” said Butler. “ATS has been comprehensively prepared for a big and unprecedented mission. That inspired us to create this unique creative platform to present ATS to luxury consumers in a big, new and engaging way.”

In Patagonia, famed as the windiest place on earth, the ATS’s advanced aerodynamics are put to the test. In Morocco, Hill pilots the ATS through a treacherous road in the Atlas Mountains that features 100 corners. In Monaco, ATS attacks the intricate and legendary Monaco Grand Prix circuit. And in China, Magnetic Ride Control technology helps ATS confront the remote hand--carved Guoliang Tunnel Road.

“It took global scale and a directorial dream team to help us pull off a production of this magnitude,” said Pat Fallon of Fallon Minneapolis, the agency behind the ad. “Jeff Zwart is one of the best car shooters in the world and Joe Berlinger is an Oscar-nominated documentarian with a great eye for human stories. A combination of talent like that is something that we just don’t see that often.”

2012 Cadillac CTS-V Coupe: Beauty & The Beast!

This past week has been quite a joy as I got to spend some time with the Cadillac CTS-V coupe, a car both beautiful in appearance and powerful under the hood. While this Cadillac is a nice car to look at on the surface, it hides a strong aggressive presence when unleashed. When you let this beast out of the cage, your better be able to handle it

Style

Right from the minute I seen this car, I dubbed it the Bat-mobile. I certainly felt like Batman driving it. And that is not to say that this would be the Bat-mobile per say, but this definitely feels like the car Bruce Wayne would be driving around when he wasn’t in the Bat suit. The car I had come in Thunder Gray Chromaflair Pigment. Okay long color name aside, this dark gray color was impressive when paired with the sharp lines of the CTS-V coupe.

When stared upon from the front the CTS-V looks mean and aggressive, a car that scream move out of the way when approaching down a long stretch. When you add the roar of the engine, quite a few people did just that when I came driving down any given street (though I wasn’t doing more than the speed limit). From the side, it looks elegant, worthy of its luxury name. I haven’t seen a more beautiful looking coupe, hence the beauty of this beast. And finally from the back it looks futuristic as if it should have wings or somehow hover and fly as opposite to having wheels. With its sharp triangle top backlight and rear design, it could easily be some kind of space jet as well lol

And finally since it is earth-bound, the all black steel looking rims just added to the overall bad ass appeal of it!

Experience

Oh man! This car is awesome to drive! Such power, from the first time I tapped the pedal I felt it. I literally spent my time driving it by just lightly tapping the pedal and coasting. I usually have a heavy foot when I drive, but driving with a heavy foot would end up having me at 80 MPH in no time. Over the weekend, I took it to an empty area with plenty of space and let it rip. I must have hit 0-60 MPH in like 2-3 seconds, 80 MPH in like 5 or 6 seconds. This car will literally suck you back into your seat when you mashed the pedal, inside this sexy elegant beauty, lies a powerful beast.

Having such power is both gift and curse. This isn’t for the urban dweller. All that power locked behind 35, at max 50 MPH speed limits, no fun at all. And then on top of that this car swallows gas like it was free water. Out of all the reviews I have done this year, I have spent the most on gas with this car, way more! I mean if you have the $72K+ to purchase a car like this, then maybe you aren’t too worried about gas. But with gas prices being what they currently are, be prepared to dig deeper into your pockets than you might be used to.

Other than those points, this car is super fun to drive. I found it especially useful at a red light in midtown Manhattan. If you’ve ever driven in Manhattan and want to be able to scoop that open space in another lane right as the light turns green, this car has you covered. There was literally no car that could beat me into another lane at a green light while on the go.

Wrap Up

The Cadillac CTS-V coupe is bad ass, it is the Bat-mobile. If you have the money you want this car. If you can get pass the gas guzzler tax, and the fact that it swallows gas all to quickly, then I highly recommend this car. Hell I recommend this car even if you have to pay more in gas than normal.

2013 Cadillac ATS 2.5-Liter Scores 33 MPG Highway Rating

Engineers at Cadillac have made much of its segment-leading lightweight construction, tipping the scales at just 3,315 pounds in base 2.5-liter four-cylinder trim. Today, the EPA released its first batch of gas mileage figures that show what the light weight achieves: 22 mpg city and 33 mpg highway.

Those are very respectable numbers in the compact luxury sport sedan class, but they're not the best, despite the ATS's light weight. the 2012 BMW 328i rates 23 mpg city and 33 mpg highway in 328i/eight-speed automatic trim--while providing 38 more horsepower from its turbo 2.0-liter than the 202-hp 2.5-liter in the ATS. The 1.8-liter turbocharged 2013 Mercedes-Benz C250 scores just 21 mpg city and 31 mpg highway with 184 horsepower, however, putting the ATS and 3-Series a step (or a step and a half) ahead.

Still, the EPA gas mileage figures give fuel-conscious buyers an option, while the 2.0-liter turbocharged version of the 2013 ATS packs 270-horsepower, and the 3.6-liter V-6 variant ups that to 318 horsepower--the latter topping the BMW 335i's 3.0-liter turbocharged in-line six-cylinder's 300-horsepower output. When equipped with the V-6 engine, the 2013 ATS gets to 60 mph in just 5.4 seconds.

Gas mileage figures for the turbo 2.0-liter and 3.6-liter V-6 versions of the ATS haven't yet been released by the EPA.

Spy Photos: 2014 Cadillac CTS

DETROIT — The Art and Science design language utilized on the current-generation Cadillac CTS helped put Cadillac on the map in the sport sedan segment, and now they're working on a new one.

We've seen photos of the 2014 Cadillac CTS testing before, but those cars were wearing heavy camoflauge that hid the detail and dimensions of the new CTS. This car, however, is wearing naught but a thin sticker.

The grille is blockier than the current car and it has a deep V design not seen on other Cadillacs.

Overall, the new CTS looks wider, longer and perhaps a little sleeker with a lower roof line (though that could be the camo) than the current car.

Our spy photogs also got a quick peek at the inside of the CTS, its Cue infotainment system with a fixed screen instead of the gimmicky pop-up one in the current car, and a shot of the new twin-turbocharged V6.

Monday Maintenance tip: The Key to a Long-Lasting Vehicle

Basic car care is the key to a long-lasting vehicle, improving its safety and dependability, says the Car Care Council.

“Neglected vehicle care almost always means much higher costs down the line in the form of more extensive repairs or lost resale value,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “Following a routine maintenance program makes financial sense, extending useful vehicle life and helping avoid costly repairs down the road.”

The Car Care Council recommends 10 basic maintenance procedures to keep your car operating at its best for the long haul:

  1. Check all fluids, including engine oil, power steering, brake and transmission as well as windshield washer solvent and antifreeze/coolant.
  1. Check the hoses and belts to make sure they are not cracked, brittle, frayed, loose or showing signs of excessive wear.
  1. Check the battery and replace if necessary. Make sure the connection is clean, tight and corrosion-free.
  1. Check the brake system annually and have the brake linings, rotors and drums inspected at each oil change.
  1. Inspect the exhaust system for leaks, damage and broken supports or hangers if there is an unusual noise. Exhaust leaks can be dangerous and must be corrected without delay.
  1. Schedule a tune-up to help the engine deliver the best balance of power and fuel economy and produce the lowest level of emissions.
  1. Check the heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) system as proper heating and cooling performance is critical for interior comfort and for safety reasons such as defrosting.
  1. Inspect the steering and suspension system annually including shock absorbers, struts and chassis parts such as ball joints, tie rod ends and other related components.
  1. Check the tires, including tire pressure and tread. Uneven wear indicates a need for wheel alignment. Tires should also be checked for bulges and bald spots.
  1. Check the wipers and lighting so that you can see and be seen. Check that all interior and exterior lighting is working properly and replace worn wiper blades so you can see clearly when driving during precipitation
