GM Foundation and Chevrolet Donate to ‘Help 4 Oklahoma’

Forgotten Harvest leads aid gathering for Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma and tornado victims

The General Motors Foundation is pledging $50,000, and Chevrolet is donating a 2013 Chevrolet Silverado full-size pickup to Forgotten Harvest to assist with the organization’s “Help 4 Oklahoma” campaign to get supplies to the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma and help those impacted by this week’s devastating tornadoes.

“The GM Foundation’s $50,000 donation to Forgotten Harvest for ‘Help 4 Oklahoma’ is just the first step in our support for those impacted by the tornadoes,” said Selim Bingol, GM’s global vice president of Communications and Public Policy and the chairman of the GM Foundation. “Our employees want to help and will volunteer locally at Forgotten Harvest, and we will engage our plants and other facilities across the U.S. to collect food to help this effort.”

To implement "Help 4 Oklahoma," Forgotten Harvest is partnering with the GM Foundation, Chevrolet, Art Van, WDIV-TV 4, WJR AM 760 and The Detroit Media Partnership.
“We will be collecting shelf-stable foods, and medical and hygiene products for the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma,” said Susan Goodell,” CEO of Forgotten Harvest. “Vehicles will be instrumental in the implementation of this effort and we thank Chevrolet for this generous donation.”

Said GM North America President Mark Reuss, vice chair of the GM Foundation: “Chevrolet continues its support of local organizations and disaster relief efforts with the donation of a Chevrolet Silverado to Forgotten Harvest. GM and the GM Foundation will support ‘Help 4 Oklahoma’ with the full breadth of our operations.”

Since 2004, the GM Foundation has provided more than $7 million to global disaster relief efforts. The Foundation is also a member of the American Red Cross Disaster Responder Program to ensure that the Red Cross has funds on hand to provide immediate relief when disaster strikes.

Anyone interested in donating to “Help 4 Oklahoma” may call 888-332-7140, visit www.forgotenharvest.org, drop off shelf-stable items at any Art Van location, or visit www.redcross.org.

Chevy engineer squeezes 900 miles from one tank in 2014 Cruze Diesel

Tessa Baughman didn't exactly set any speed records on a recent visit to her Arkansas family from Michigan, unless you factor in the time saved on not filling up a few times.

The energy engineer for the Chevy Cruze Diesel, interviewed in a short General Motors video said she was able to go 900 miles on a single tank during the first leg of the drive. The catch is that she drove "five below speed limit" the whole way down, but she certainly more than backed up the EPA's Cruze Diesel fuel-economy rating of 46 miles per gallon, the best of any non-hybrid vehicle. Heck, that's a well-north-of-50 mpg pace for the model, which comes equipped with low rolling-resistance tires, a six-speed automatic transmission, tire deflectors and other fuel-saving features.

Baughman went at a slightly brisker pace on the way back, i.e. with the flow of traffic, but was still able to wring 800 miles between fill-ups. We're guessing there were no speeding tickets involved, either.

410-HP 2014 Cadillac XTS Gets Revised Grille, Other Updates

The full-size Cadillac XTS sedan enters the 2014 model year with a newly available 410-hp twin-turbo 3.6-liter V-6 as well as a few other features. The XTS with the available 410-hp V-6 will sport a slightly revised front grille, but other trims will benefit from new equipment, as well.

XTS owners can now impress their friends with the Cadillac’s automatic parking system, which only requires the driver to control the throttle and brakes once the car is in reverse. In a comparison test with a 2013 XTS and 2014 Acura RLX, we said the Cadillac tended to “bog down coming out of slower corners.” That XTS was also a full second slower than the RLX, accelerating from 0-60 mph in 6.9 seconds. The 410-hp XTS, which gets “Twin-Turbo” badges and a revised front grille, shouldn’t have that problem.

Electric power steering is now standard on all front-drive models, but expected EPA fuel economy hasn’t changed on 304-hp models. Other additions for 2014 include an opaque sunroof sunshade, a revised rear-seat armrest, available front passenger seat memory settings, and a rear-seat entertainment system with DVD screens that fold out of the backs of the front seats. GM has been working on speeding up the processing speed of the CUE infotainment system, an improvement that should appear on the 2014 XTS.

Elsewhere in the Cadillac lineup, the CTS wagon, CTS-V sedan, and CTS-V wagon continue into the 2014 model year with new colors. The 2014 Cadillac CTS and CTS-V coupes also get new exterior colors, and now offer a Sport Blue interior package.

The 2014 Cadillac ATS has a few minor updates including a 110-volt outlet in the rear of the center console on cars with CUE and the navigation system. A frameless inside rearview mirror and four additional colors are new, as well. Cars with steering wheel paddle shifters get a larger, leather-wrapped steering wheel. The ATS will still be available with a naturally aspirated 202-hp I-4, a 272-hp turbocharged I-4, and 321-hp V-6. Only the turbo-four is available with a six-speed manual transmission, and before long an automatic with eight or more speeds may appear on the ATS’ options list.

GM to Build Cadillac Plant in China

SHANGHAI—General Motors Co. said its Shanghai GM joint venture received permission from Chinese authorities to build an eight billion yuan ($1.3 billion) factory to manufacture its Cadillac brand, boosting the auto maker's ambition of becoming a larger player in China's booming luxury-car market.

"We've decided that the luxury market is going to grow and we want a bigger share," said Dayna Hart, a spokeswoman for GM in China.

Shanghai GM first disclosed plans for a Cadillac factory to supply the Chinese market in April 2012. The National Development and Reform Commission recently approved the plant, a GM spokeswoman said.

Last month, GM said its Chinese joint ventures would invest $11 billion by 2016 to expand their combined production capacity by 30% to five million vehicles a year.

The Detroit-based auto maker earned $550 million in the first quarter from its Chinese joint ventures, estimated Barclays. GM doesn't separately break out its China profit.

The Cadillac factory would be able to produce up to 150,000 vehicles a year when completed. Construction is scheduled to begin in June, but a U.S. spokesman couldn't say when production would begin. The facility will be built in Jinqiao, Shanghai, where GM's biggest joint venture, Shanghai GM, and GM China's headquarters are located.

GM launched its Cadillac XTS sedan here in March. The company has also introduced refreshed editions of the luxury SUV SRX, Cadillac's best-selling model in China. GM has said it would bring Cadillac's global portfolio to China by adding one model per year through 2016.

Last year, Cadillac sold just 30,000 vehicles in China. GM said in January it aimed to increase Cadillac sales to 100,000 a year here by 2016. GM has said its longer-term goal is to take Cadillac's share of the luxury-car market to 10% by 2020.

Car sales in China rose 7.1% in 2012 to 15.5 million vehicles, according to the semiofficial China Association of Automobile Manufacturers. The Chinese premium car market accounts for 9% of all passenger-car sales, according to consultancy McKinsey & Co., compared with 4% in Japan and 6% in South Korea.

McKinsey expects 12% annual growth through 2020, outperforming 8% growth projected for the broader car market.

The consultancy expects China's premium car market to reach three million units by 2020 and says the country could become the world's largest premium car market as early as 2016, ahead of the U.S. and Germany.

"The potential of premium segment is still big with many consumers upgrading their first car. If the product is good then the risk can be quite low," said Yale Zhang, managing director of Automotive Foresight (Shanghai) Co., an automotive consulting company in China. "Cadillac will gain market share in the foreseeable future."

The GM spokeswoman didn't comment directly on recent moves by the Chinese government to encourage officials to deploy domestic brands in their fleets, but noted other segments of the market promised growth.

"There are a lot of young and affluent buyers out there" interested in buying luxury cars, she said.

Macquarie's Ms. Lewis said that to win over such consumers, GM would have to convince them that American brands can be luxury brands. "I think for now Chinese consumers associate 'old-world, European' with luxury, rather than 'new world, American,'" she said.

Rohrich's service rep, Gill Porr, was very kind & helpful in taking care of my oil change service appt. (just as he was in taking care of my service appt, including my PA state inspection). I was VERY late, due to unexpected circumstances, and he still squeezed me in to help me anyway. I was EXTREMELY grateful for Gill's attitude in wanting to do what it took to help me, & to not have to turn away Rohrich's business/customer. I am EXTREMELY appreciative for doing business with Rohrich & will continue to be your LOYAL (& on-time) customer. THANK YOU VERY MUCH, ROHRICH! Edwin H.
